Mudanza (II acto)

Installation

Variable dimensions

2018

Project carried out in several acts. The first act took place in 2016 in the program Residentes de Sala Guirigai, between Los Santos de Maimona (Badajoz) and Barcelona. The second act begins in Bilbao and passes through the Complutense Art Center in Madrid to finish in Seville.

Isn't moving also a way of changing? Losing objects to gain others?... Along these lines, this project makes us wonder if moving is the quintessential symbol of precariousness today.

In the first act the change is approached from the theatrical gesture. A transfer is always an alteration (space, time, state...) that implies performativity due to its continuous and procedural nature. Moving away from home brings with it a series of peculiarities that make the action a truly theatrical phenomenon, which could even have a direct relationship with the art system. The ritual of packing and unpacking, transportation, or the selection and categorization of works based on their value lead us to think of personal collections of objects that we drag from one place to another, as if hoarding them were our only response to the lack of stability of the present.

In the second act (2018), the work was part of the exhibition "Narrativas de andar por casa" at the Complutense Art Center in Madrid. This piece was exhibited three years after the initial research process that gave rise to the first act, so most of the objects that were used in the project no longer existed: some objects were loans from the participants, others simply could not be stored due to the artist's continuous changes of residence. This need for incessant movement, caused in part by the obligation to be visible, translates into constraints when it comes to rethinking the pieces each time they are going to be exhibited. In this case, it starts from the only thing that was preserved from that first experience: a small publication where reality and fiction are mixed.

In this case, the new installation (act II) operates as a warehouse for the artist's personal belongings —At that moment she was changing residence for the third time that year. In the time-space-state that takes shape in between Bilbao and Barcelona, the boxes rest in Madrid. A midpoint between the comfortable and the temporary. A store where the book is only accessible through a projection. Large cushions invite the viewer to sit in a seemingly comfortable place, while the boxes are full of personal items, waiting to be transferred back to the artist's next place of work.
